Maggie is quick and bright, but her father, who loves her dearly, expresses a concern that such attributes are not an asset in a girl. The thing is, I came to it this time from a much older point of view, and while I’m sure that the love story and the tragedy were the focus of my first reading, the familial love and the questions of how much we owe to the feelings of others, if those are soothed to the detriment of ourselves, are the central issues I found myself struggling with this time around. I remember being blown away and the two of us discussing it at length, and I have always regarded it as my favorite Eliot, although I have read many others since and consider Middlemarch to be a masterpiece of literary achievement. It was an English class assignment for my older sister, and, as I frequently did, I stole away to read the book while it was in her possession. I first read Mill on the Floss when I was thirteen years old. ![]() ![]() So it’s not a favourite, for that reason, but something I did enjoy reading. It’s clever, but because of the nature of the story - again, not saying too much - there’s not a lot to grab onto in terms of character, which is often how I get most hooked into a story. I’ll probably at least skim through it again and see what I can spot. Valente, 9781250816214, available at Book Depository with free delivery worldwide. Right away, you can tell something strange is going on, and it sucks you in. Not with over-the-top, pulse-pounding action, but with subtle curiosities that immediately make you question what’s going on. I feel like I’m missing a lot about how the story is put together - there’s an obvious level that is quickly apparent, of course, but I think there’s most likely a lot more that I didn’t catch onto at first. Comfort Me With Apples: My Thoughts This is one of those books that grabs you right away. Even as a very non-visual person, it always works. ![]() As you’d expect of Valente, it’s rich language with lots of descriptions, and it’s worth lingering over to let her paint the pictures for you. This is a novella which takes a number of different elements and whisks them together - and to explain too much about what exactly goes into the mix might tip you off about what’s going on in Valente’s Arcadia, so I won’t. I hope to see more of her Mount Bay life in next book to get a clearer picture of her history before Hannaford Prep along with what summer is truly like for her as her Wolf persona. Of course Lips continues to face her own challenges being the wolf, and keeping peace with the Jackal. The awkwardness with Lips with Ash, Blaise, and Harley makes for some good chuckles as the boys navigate what it's like to want someone they can't have. I love that Bree keeps Lips her own person and continues to get stronger because of her relationships. She continues to stay strong and independent despite having these new relationships in her life that she can lean on. ![]() Bree keeps Lips friendship with Avery separate from each of their relationships with the three boys. This book definitely builds up the sexual chemistry and tension between Lips and the three boys separately. Blaise, and Harley continue to have problems of their own. They continue to have problems with Ash and Avery's brother Joey. ![]() Bree keeps this book PG as the characters are only sophomores in High School, and dealing with some pretty heavy stuff. This book is a great follow up to the first book, and a slow burn leading up to Lips dating her three boys.
